Standard Reference Methods (SRMs)

Standard Reference Methods (SRMs) are the "gold standard" for measuring emissions from industrial sources. They are used to perform the Relative Accuracy Test Audit (RATA) for a Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS). While both the European Union (EN) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) have their own sets of SRMs, they share the same fundamental purpose: to validate the accuracy of a CEMS.

USEPA SRM Methods: The American Standard

The USEPA has developed a series of methods to ensure that emissions monitoring is both accurate and consistent. These methods are a key part of the regulatory framework outlined in 40 CFR Part 60. We specialize in providing testing services for these methods, which are essential for industries that need to comply with U.S. regulations or trade with U.S.-based companies.

Method 3A

For the determination of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in stack gases.

Method 6C

For the determination of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in stack gases.

Method 7E

For the determination of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from stationary sources.

Method 10

For the determination of carbon monoxide (CO) in stack gases.

EN SRM Standards: The European Approach

The European Union's emissions monitoring standards, outlined in documents such as DIN EN 14181 and the DIN EN 15267 series, also rely on SRMs for quality assurance of CEMS. These standards are crucial for any company operating within the EU or exporting goods to European countries. We provide expert testing services that are fully compliant with these standards.

Our services cover a range of key EN SRMs:

EN 14791

The SRM for determining the mass concentration of Sulfur oxides (SOx) in stack gases.

EN 14792

The standard reference method for determining the mass concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx), using the chemiluminescence principle.

EN 13284-1

This standard specifies the manual gravimetric method for measuring low concentrations of dust (particulate matter) in ducted gaseous streams.

EN 14789

The standard reference method for determining the volume concentration of Oxygen (O2) in flue gases, based on the paramagnetic principle.

BS EN 14790

The standard reference method for determining the water vapor content in ducts, typically using a condensation/adsorption technique.

EN ISO 21877

This standard specifies a manual method for the determination of the mass concentration of ammonia (NH3) in waste gases.

CEN/TS 17021

This technical specification details an instrumental method for determining the concentration of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) emissions.

CEN/TS 17405

This technical specification outlines a reference method for the measurement of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) concentration.

EN 15058

This standard specifies the SRM for determining the mass concentration of carbon monoxide (CO).

EN ISO 16911-1

This standard specifies the manual reference method for the determination of Velocity and Volume Flow rate in ducts.
